Construction process
All sculptures are hand built using additive and subtractive methods
I will often start with slab and build from there
Clay supports are used throughout the process to keep parts and pieces in position and to protect against cracking during the firing process
Dowel rods and wire supports may be used to maintain gesture during sculpting
All sculptures are either built hollow or cut and hollowed in the leather hard stage
Clay bases on slab built
Finish and Firing for Finding Balance Series:
Pieces are bisqued fired to Cone 05
Sanding or grinding may be needed
Porcelain Slip is generally brushed or sprayed and then the piece is fired to Cone 6
An Oxide wash is applied and the piece is fired to Cone 6. This step may be repeated depending on the number of color washes and the depth of color desired.
Amaco Velvet Underglazes are used on the bases
Bases and sculptures are fired separately
Sculptures are adhered to bases.
