Construction process

  • All sculptures are hand built using additive and subtractive methods

  • I will often start with slab and build from there

  • Clay supports are used throughout the process to keep parts and pieces in position and to protect against cracking during the firing process

  • Dowel rods and wire supports may be used to maintain gesture during sculpting

  • All sculptures are either built hollow or cut and hollowed in the leather hard stage

  • Clay bases on slab built

  • Finish and Firing for Finding Balance Series:

    • Pieces are bisqued fired to Cone 05

    • Sanding or grinding may be needed

    • Porcelain Slip is generally brushed or sprayed and then the piece is fired to Cone 6

    • An Oxide wash is applied and the piece is fired to Cone 6. This step may be repeated depending on the number of color washes and the depth of color desired.

    • Amaco Velvet Underglazes are used on the bases

    • Bases and sculptures are fired separately

    • Sculptures are adhered to bases.
